Automatic Ice Cube Makers

I have always wondered about this. Are automatic ice cube makers worth the extra cost of the refrigerator up front as well as possible maintenance or repair fees down the line? I have never had an automatic ice maker, but I bet they are very handy when you are expecting many guests for a party.

Next to those built-in water dispensers on the outside of refrigerator doors, automatic ice cube makers are the next thing that transforms a refrigerator from the “everyday” to the “fancy” category in my book.

My friend has both on his refrigerator so I every time I visit, I only fill my water glasses halfway so I have an excuse to use the water dispenser twice as much! While not as much fun, the ice maker may be more practical, though.

I must say that it makes a grinding noise during operation. I don’t know if they are all like that or just some models. My guess is that all the models claim to be “whisper quiet” or some such advertising-like phrase, but they probably all make noise.

If you have an ice maker in your refrigerator or had one in the past, please let us know. If not, please tell us why you didn’t get one.
