Talking On Cell Phones In Movie Theaters

This is kind of a double entry today because I was going to write about text messaging anyway, but then I thought of what happened in the movie theater the other day. This is the second time I have seen (or more importantly heard) someone talking on a cell phone DURING a movie.

Although I have no use for text messaging, since other people love it so much, why don’t they use while the movie is playing instead of talking on the cell phone?

I first used Internet chat as far back as 1995 and I’ve had a cell phone since 1991 so I am certainly not afraid of technology and obviously neither medium is new to me.

What I don’t get is combining them, which is all the rage these days. I’m talking about text messaging. I don’t see the point - especially considering how much timelier it is to type on a cell phone keypad than to just call the person. If you need to leave a message, voice mail is available, still no need for typing.

The only practical reason I can think of for sending a text message is when background sound would make a call impossible…such as at a concert or while on a noisy commuter train. Is it that necessary that messages must be sent at those times?

Historically, the telephone supplanted the telegraph. It seems like this is a step backwards!, , , , , , , , , ,
