DD Smart Flatbread Sandwiches Review

It was about three weeks ago when I wrote an entry singing the praises of the Dunkin Donuts Flatbread Sandwiches and giving them my official WORTH IT rating. I have had those delicious sandwiches several times since I wrote the entry and I haven’t been disappointed.

I had also mentioned how different franchise locations sell them at different prices. Usually, outlets along the highway cost more, but I was surprised to a see sign at one the other day for the Ham & Cheese Flatbread for only $3.59. That was only ten cents higher than the cheapest price I had seen elsewhere.

In my original blog entry, I asked what new flavors you would like to see Dunkin Donuts introduce. Little did I know that they were actually working on some new varieties! I haven’t seen them in the locations yet, but the advertising with Rachel Ray is out so they must be coming soon.

At 350 calories, I think the Ham & Cheese is good caloric bargain. The new ones have even fewer calories. They made up some new marketing promotion called DD Smart which is the overall brand identity for lower calorie/healthier choices on their menu. Apparently, they are introducing a bunch of new items to fall under this marketing umbrella.

For today, lets stick with the flatbreads. The two new flavors are the Eggwhite Turkey Sausage Flatbread Sandwich (saying it is a mouthful, never mind eating it) and the Eggwhite Veggie Flatbread Sandwich. The Eggwhite Turkey Sausage version comes in at only 280 calories and 6 grams of fat. I’m impressed. The Eggwhite Veggie Flatbread Sandwich has 290 calories and 9 grams of fat.

There’s a good general nutrition lesson in those numbers above. Based on their names, you would certainly expect the sausage sandwich to have more fat and more calories than a sandwich with veggie in the name. That’s why it’s so important to read labels, do research and make informed choices.

(Nutrition info comes from the Dunkin Donuts website on 8/8/08.)
