Places To Take The Kids On Vacation

Places To Take The Kids On Vacation

While April vacation has just ended for students around the country, it’s not too early to start thinking about where you will take the kids on summer vacation or even on a long weekend for Memorial Day Weekend.

In every geographic area of the country, there are a myriad of activities and destinations that offer both a fun and educational experience at the same time. There may even be some in your own community that you overlook. These are often called local gems and like, prophets, are hardly ever properly appreciated in their hometowns.

One such local gem can be found in Orange, Texas and is called the W.H. Stark House. Here is a picture of it that shows the size and scope. It looks like the perfect setting for a movie. I hope Hollywood is paying attention!

(UPDATE: Sorry, the picture that was shown here is no longer available which is too bad since it was a good picture.)

The W.H. Stark is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission. It is so interesting to visit sites like this and will be great for the kids. (Kids that are ten years of age and older are admitted to the tour described below). It helps bring history alive for them so they can see the architecture and everyday artifacts that were part of our ancestors’ lives. Touring a historic house like this is much better than simply reading about the time period in a history book.

There is a tour available of this magnificent structure. It is a 15 room house with over 14,000 square feet so there is plenty to see! In fact, the website has amazing pictures of the different rooms if you want a preview. I think both kids and adulst alike will also like the antique automobile in the carriage house on the property. The tour also includes information about the family that lived in the house. In effect, it is a way to experience the time period through the lives of the Stark family that lived their at the turn nineteenth century into the twentieth century., ,
