User Generated Content Television
You probably have seen or heard the phrase “user generated content” at least once day for the past couple of years. You know that user generated content refers to material that people create themselves and then upload to the Internet to share with friends, family, and strangers.
The content can be audio only or text, but clearly video is the most popular. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before user generated content made it to the airwaves too – that’s right – UCG goes big time – on television.
It seems appropriate to mention the often-quoted line. “In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.” This is often shortened to “fifteen minutes of fame.” Another great line I read a while back was, “On the Internet, everyone will be famous to 15 people.” I loved that one too.
Now, it seems that instead of fame spreading from traditional media to the Internet, it may just flow in the opposite direction thanks to a site called YawpBox. The site features radio hosts (might as well mix in another medium too!) Lex & Terry who are creating a television show consisting of user generated content.
UPDATE: Last time I checked the site, it was a parked page which means that someone still owns the domain, but there was no content on it other than front page advertising links.
The idea is that your content could reach a vast audience, including those that would not have found you online, but might see you on the TV show.
I think the most interesting kind of UGC is that which tells a story. Of course, most people prefer humorous (highly dependent on one’s definition of course) videos, but I think that videos which tell a story are more interesting, especially those created for contests in which the participants are explaining why they should win a prize or be considered as contestants for the contest.
If you’re not sure what you would include in a video, check the site for suggested and popular categories as well as other details.
