Expensive Pet Food

This is a great follow up to my recent post about social networking for pet owners.

Stop and think – what kind of food do you buy for your pet. Why?

Is fancy pet food worth it?

I know this topic is going to ruffle some feathers (pun definitely intended). I know people who, as I like to say, “have fallen for the advertising.” They think their pets should eat only “premium” food.

Of course, the Madison Avenue marketing whizzes want you to believe your pet is special and deserves “the best” by which they mean the brand that is going to take the most money out of your pocket.

Do you really believe that the more expensive brands are any better nutritionally than less expensive brands?

What about the difference nutirtionally between premium pet foods that are only sold at pet stores as opposed to those brands that are available at regular grocery stores.

Do Fido and Fluffy eat better than you?

Discount Eyeglasses Online

I came across a great group of sites that fits right into my new blog category examining if consumers are getting their money’s worth on certain items. Although this is so obvious, I never thought to look into it: discount prescription eyeglasses online.

Of course, I’ve known about getting contacts online for years because of the big marketing campaigns that went on in the beginning of the millennium for several fo the sites. I can only assume they were battling out for market share and market dominance. Maybe they were recipients of pre dotcom bust venture capital so they had large advertising budgets.

Anyway, who knew that there was also a ton of sites devoted to discount glasses?

Once I started looking into it the other day, I couldn’t believe how many were out there. Predictably, I found lots of consumer comments that ran the gamut from saying these sites for cheap glasses were the greatest thing that ever came along to people complaining about terrible customer service and eye professionals putting them down for various reasons.

Considering the outrageous cost of prescription glasses, I think the discount sites are definitely worth looking into (pun intended!), even if you only used them to buy a spare pair.

Yahoo For Kids

I’ve talked about parents monitoring their children’s Internet use by having the computer placed in full view of the parents in the main room of the house where the family spends most of its time.

One suggestion I haven’t really seen for parents is giving them websites that they could surf with their kids. Here’s one: Yahoo Kids.

The design of the site would appeal to kids. The colors and the design scheme remind me of Nickelodeon’s look. The Yahoo site has games, jokes, trivia, an encyclopedia, music videos, and more.

It should keep you and your children entertained together for hours.

Bottled Water Prices

Doesn’t it kill you to have to pay bottled water prices? I mean, we get water practically free from the kitchen faucet, so why is bottled water so darn expensive? Yes, I know, it’s all about the marketing and packaging.

Speaking of the the marketing and packaging, for some reason, people just assume that any bottled water they buyy int he store is automatically spring water and therefore better than their normal tap water. People should be aware that many brands of bottled water in the store are what si called “filtered water.” Filtered water usually comes from a regular, municipal source…in other words, the same water source as that which comes from your own tap. The companies claim that the filtered water is better because, even though they are using a city water supply, the additional filtering process they put it through removes impurities that are allowed in the normal supply.

While those claims may be true, is it enough to justify bottled water prices? Do those impurities really make any difference or any significant difference health wise?

One way to make bottled water prices a little more palatable (pun definitely intended) when you have to pay for water is to get flavored water. I’ve found it to be surprisingly good tasting. In fact, it is a dieter’s delight since you can now have great and zero calories all at the same time. Who knew? The verdict is that flavored water is definitely worth it!
