Johnny Depp’s New Movie Sweeney Todd
When you stop and think about Johnny Depp, you realize that very few actors have made the transition from heartthrob to amazingly talented serious actor. I once read an article in which the author commented that one of the most thankless jobs in Hollywood would include being Johnny Depp’s agent for the very reason that he didn’t confine himself to the mega-heartthrob roles which could have brought untold millions for a short amount of time.
No doubt the writer was being facetious as I’m sure Johnny’s agent is well-compensated, especially after the outrageous success of Pirates of The Caribbean movies. That leads me to the next point…trying to decide which is my favorite scene from a Johnny Depp movie.
Should it be when he played Donnie Brasco in the movie of the same name and stood on the pier giving Al Pacino’s character, Lefty, the chance to leave with a good deal of money and not be brought in by the FBI? You could see the pain on Depp’s face as he wrestled with the decision of offering the character a way out. Should my favorite scene be when Depp played Mort Rainey in Secret Window and he confronted the other author at the lake with shovel in hand? I hardly recognized him with the change in appearance including glasses, facial hair, and haircut.
I’m going with the Donnie Brasco scene because I think that one called for a deeper acting skill level. It will be interesting to see what he does in his new role as Sweeney Todd. I’ve started to see some commercials for it. You can view the trailer when you visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site. You can also visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace and see what the buzz is over there.
