Parent Mind Reading

As part of the second audio lesson in the Total Transformation System , I heard of a concept that I had not thought of before, but one which makes perfect sense to me.

The presenter talks about the idea of parents doing mind reading…and he is not talking about any feats as might be seen on NBC’s new show Phenomenon starring Uri Geller and Criss Angel. He is talking about something much simpler – the idea that parents in public try to guess or “mind read” what other parents think of the parenting job they are doing by observing how the children behave and how the parents react.

Admit it – he’s right! Every time I observe kids behavior in public and the parents interactions with them, I certainly make observations and conclusions about how effective their parenting skills are.

Beyond that, Lehman is pointing out an extension to this concept. (He is very good at doing that. I love how he takes everything he discusses and shows how it naturally evolves to the next logical step.)

Long Distance Prepaid Phone Cards

Have you ever heard the name of a website and didn’t know exactly what it was, but you knew that based on the name, you had to check it out?

Such is the case when I heard of PinShark.com. It just has a “ring to it.” OK, I phrased it that way on purpose because it turns out that the site is about saving money by using on long distance international phone cards.

I thought a few years ago that phone cards would be losing popularity due to the proliferation of cell phones. Have you ever seen the outrageous rates that cell phone companies charge for international long distance calls? They are just as bad as the traditional landline phone long distance charges.

Charging those prices from traditional outlets has left the market wide open for discount priced competitors to grab a share of it by offering pre-paid cards to consumers. Make sure you see how much money you can save with a pre-paid card before you pay way too much with your regular phone companies. In other words, don’t just pick up and dial until you have done your homework.

Kids Training Parents

Wait! You’re wondering if I mixed up the words in the title of this post, right? Shouldn’t it be Parents Training Kids? Yes, it should be and no, I didn’t mix up the words. I wrote them exactly as they should be to explain the point of this blog posting.

Although I have may have mentioned this excellent point before elsewhere in this review series, it certainly bears repeating.

If parents give in to a kid’s demand in order to avoid some negative behavior (such as the kid throwing a fit or embarrassing the parent in public), then that is nothing more than classic behavior modification that you learned about in Psychology 101 in your freshman year of college. Did you ever imagine it would be the kids in control of the experiment? Did you ever picture the inmates running the asylum, as they say?

Parents, you need to think about this, the next time you “cave in” to a demand from a kid or the next time you let your kids get away with something in order to avoid a confrontation with them over it.

Are you ready to start training your kids instead of the other way around?, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Solar Air Conditioning

When you first hear the term “solar air conditioning, it almost sounds oxymoronic, doesn’t it?

What it refers to is the idea of using solar power to replace the traditional gas-powered element of an air conditioning system. Of course, solar power is also used to heat the water as well in heating systems.

It amazes me that we as a society and country have not embraced solar power at a quicker pace. Considering the ever-rising cost of non-renewable sources of energy (not to mention the political aspects of many of those sources as well), you would think those two factors alone would make solar energy a significant part of our energy needs plans.

One thing business people understand is ROI or return on investment. If more homeowners were familiar with the concept, they would probably be exploring Apricus solar options as we speak (or write/read). Visit this link for solar air conditioning ROI information and you will see a great explanation of the concept.

Considering, in addition to other points raised above, there are state and federal incentives (aka solar tax credits) when you install a system using this alternative energy source, there is no better time than now to research and implement such a system for your home or commercial property.

Are Behavior Problems A Phase

I can imagine three reactions to the question, “Are behavior problems a phase?”

A young, inexperienced parent facing a certain behavior problem for the first time convinces himself or herself that it will pass and it’s nothing to worry about.

A parent who originally felt as the one above, but is now stuck in an ever-increasing mess of bad behavior will have a different opinion. He or she won’t understand how something minor has gotten so out of hand and will wonder if there is ever a way out of the situation.

An older parent or wise grandparent will probably just laugh at the question knowing how silly it is. He or she will know that bad behaviors in children don’t simply go away- they must be phased out by active parenting if you want them to become a passing phase!

I don’t know why parents want to fool themselves into thinking negatives behaviors in their children will go away on their own. Have you ever known a bad behavior in a co-worker to disappear by itself or did it get progressively worse because an ineffective boss did nothing to fix the situation?

Printer Cartridges

One of the most irritating things about your home printer is when it runs out of ink. This always seems to happen right in the middle of printing an important document such as a school assignment or research for work.

That’s why it’s best to keep extra cartridges on hand so you don’t have to do a mad dash to a retail store at the last minute and hope that they have what you need in stock. Want to find the right cartridge for your printer? Check Cartridge Finder right now and compare prices.

The Ideal Child Part 2

The Ideal Child – Part 2

As stated in part one of The Ideal Child, the first step to changing a kid’s behavior is recognizing that you need to understand how to work with the kid you have, not the one you thought you would be getting in life.

I’m skipping ahead a bit, but this relates to the idea that you can (and should) parent each child, even within the same family, differently. (Yes, I know the controversey that will initiate among sibling rivalry enthusiasts.)

Here’s a concrete example. Most kids have curfews because they need them. They will stay out all night if they are not given a strict time to return home. When I was a teenager, all my friends had certain times they were supposed to be home and we would watch the clock to make sure they were not late. In my own case, I didn’t have a particular curfew. Technically, I could have stayed out as long as I wanted to, but I didn’t feel the need to do so and I never stayed out past a time that my parents thought was inappropriate or that any of my friend’s parents would have found inappropriate for their kids.

Because I was reasonable and responsible, my parents knew that I would return home at a reasonable and responsible time each night so there was no problem and no need to impose curfews. There are plenty of kids for whom that attitude would never work and should never be tried because they would take advantage of it and stay out until the next morning.

This reinforces the point of parenting to the reality of the situation, not the idealized version thereof. Learn how to parent the kid you have., , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Oak Beds Versus Metal Bed Frames

I just saw the picture below and my first thought was this is much nicer than my old metal bed frame that doesn’t even have a backboard! (Not to mention that my bedroom doesn’t have that floor AND ceiling [as opposed to floor TO ceiling] window either.)

Oak beds like this remind me of the look you see in a nice hotel room or on television and you wish you had that at home. If that’s the case, why not get the nice for yourself. After all, people spend on third of their lives in bed so the time should be spent in something comfortable.
