Penny Machines
Does any one remember those penny machines that you find at carnivals, amusement parks, and other tourist attractions?
I’m talking about the kind of penny machine that allows you to create your own penny adding in your own design or impression.
A coin press like that can also be used to change the shape of the penny by elongating it. The first time I ever saw one of those was at an amusement park. I still remember I being inside the arcade, right next to a fortune telling machine that talked. While my friends and I were getting our souvenir pennies, we could hear the fortuneteller voice giving the kids next to us supposed glimpses into their future.
The machine didn’t a theme per se, it just had different examples all over it of what designs could he made with it. We ended up choosing a horseshoe design to indicate that we had the good luck to be at the park as a group having a good time that day.
Do you have any memories of making your own souvenir coins?
