Cell Phone Advertising

All media types eventually evolve into using advertising one way or another. It should come as no surprise that the cell phone industry is evolving this way as well.

As more and more companies try their hands at what is called mobile marketing (also known as sms marketing, you will see more support companies spring up offering mobile marketing software as well as mobile website hosting and mobile website designs services.

It will be interesting to watch this industry develop over time. Indeed, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the practice to be widespread. It has already been tried by a number of global brands and no doubt other large corporations will follow suit as they see the success stories from innovators. They will also learn from and improve upon efforts that do not bring the desired results. Of course, since this marketing strategy is in its infancy, a baseline for considering a campaign a success (other than the advertising paying for itself of course) probably has not been established yet.

A great concern of brand leaders experimenting with mobile marketing campaigns is how consumers will perceive the marketing messages. Will they find them intrusive or helpful? I think consumers will accept them readily if they lead to lower rates for using the mobile services. Since the carriers will be getting advertising fees, some of that profit could be used to lower consumer rates.

The industry needs to position itself in the minds of consumers similar to the television industry. While networks are completely ad supported and network television can be watched for free, there are of course a myriad of pay options as well with varying degrees of advertising.
