Dental Insurance Alternative
When you have health insurance from an employer, you usually also get a dental insurance plan so most people assume that the two are related or part of the same package. This is not necessarily the case.
If you have ever had to shop for insurance on your own, either because you were unemployed, or self employed working as an independent contractor, then you will know what I am talking about when I say that people who are looking to buy dental insurance on their own are often in for a surprise for two reasons. The first surprise is because they don’t even expect that they will have to purchase it separately from general health insurance and secondly because of the cost of the dental plans.
If you are up against this kind of surprise and don’t feel that you can afford a dental insurance plan for you and your family, then you should look into some other options. I just wrote an entry the other day about the fact that, for the first time in decades, cavities are on the rise in children. You certainly don’t want to leave your kids without the protection they need for something so important as their teeth.
What is an alternative then to traditional dental plans? There is something called a discount dental plan. Discount dental plans allow families or groups to get a cheaper rate for various services when they visit participating dentists. Participants can save much more than it costs to join the plan.
Both dentists and patients prefer certain aspects of this alternative over traditional insurance because of the reduction in paperwork. For example, there are no claim forms involved since patients pay up front, simply showing their plan card in order to qualify for the discounted rate. Also, there are no mandatory waiting periods before benefits kick in or between similar treatments. (I always find those waiting rather insulting and infuriating. When a consumer pays his or her premium in a regular plan, he or she ought to have instant access to all the plan has to offer.) With discount dental plans, consumers can get the treatment when they and their service provider think it is necessary.
