Summer Treats

What is the best summer treat that you remember from childhood?

Here is a list of things I thought of:

1. Ice cream cups (aka “Hoodsies” if you live in the right region)
2. Watermelon
3. Lemonade
4. Fla-Vor Ice
5. Strawberry shortcake.
6. Popsicles
7. Fudgicles

Let’s face it, the list isn’t just for kids! So why not go treat yourself to one of these items right now and bring yourself back to those carefree days of childhood in the summer.

What would you add to the list?

Summer Businesses For Kids

Here is a mini-list of summer businesses for kids. Some are traditional and some are modern, but all of them would keep the kids busy and get them earning some pocket change as well as teaching them business principles in a level they could understand.

1. Start a lawn care service. The kids can lean advertising by printing up some flyers on the computer and salesmanship by soliciting business from neighbors. The bonus is all the exercise they will get while they are out.

2. Sell lemonade. What kid hasn’t tried that at least once? If the lemonade stand is in front of the house and you don’t mind the kids going in and out as necessary, here’s a tip – have the kids keep a rotating batch in the freezer to sell as slush. It will be a big hit.

3. Start a website. Have the kids identify a need they and their friends wish was available online and have them come up with the idea to fulfill the need. Then actually help them create the website.

What ideas can you add to the list?

Kids With Their Own Phones

It’s funny how things change over the years in some ways. I remember that years ago it was a big deal when you were a kid if you had your own phone in your bedroom. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you had your own phone number, but just an extension so you could talk privately on the phone.

What a joke that is today when so many households are giving up their landlines completely and every member of the household has his or her own cell phone. Also, more and more kids get their own laptops too.

Now that kids can be in constant communication with their friends, the next question is if they are better off because of it.

Express Yourself

Ok 80’s fans, don’t worry, I promise not to sing and ruin your memories of Madonna’s song Express Yourself. Better you remember her version!

I do want to talk about the fact that people can express themselves these days more easily than ever thanks to technology and the Internet. When I was a kid, I remember there was a big deal in school one time because you could buy a book or magazine from Scholastic Scope and it came with a blank bumper sticker. Kids were so excited because we never even considered that we could make our own bumper stickers.

Fast forward to the present and a site called The website allows people to create their own bumper stickers (and other kinds of stickers and decals) online and then have them shipped in the mail. Think of how much fun you and your kids could have with those!

What would your bumper sticker say?
