Parenting Advice

I would like to introduce readers to Shirlee Smith, an expert who dispenses parenting advice through her website, television show, newspaper column, book, and parenting training workshops. Shirlee has had five children as well as been a foster parent to over a dozen more. Talk about parenting experience!

I love the title of her book. It’s called They’re Your Kids Not Your Friends.

Stop and think about it that for a moment. How often do you hear parents say that they want to be a friend to their kids? Much too often. I think Shirlee is on the right track with her attitude. Unfortunately, parents who try to take the friends route end up losing any sense of authority in the parent-child relationship. When that happens, the children may like their parents, but they won’t respect them in the sense that is necessary for proper child rearing.
